"Wow!"

Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar is, without a doubt, the most thorough instructional course I've ever seen! Regardless of one's level of accomplishment on the bass, this series of ten DVDs offers something for everyone; even those who have never picked up a bass before.

Roy sets a really cool vibe by speaking directly to the viewer from inside a colorfully decorated coffee house set. The high definition production quality is first rate, the color is beautiful, the audio is clear and the mix is just right. The authenticity of the coffee house club environment is further enhanced by people occasionally walking around in the background, preparing drinks, etc.

Roy's narrative is aided by a "moonface" named Ralph in the lower right corner of the screen, who frequently chimes in with his own commentary via on-screen text, sometimes genuine but often just funny. More on-screen assistance pops up on the left side of the screen from time to time by way of Post-it note-style messages, offering metronome markings and other advice. More importantly (and I guess more seriously), a graphic of a fretboard appears on the bottom of the screen, doing away with any uncertainty regarding proper notes, fingerings and frets, all in a real-time "follow the bouncing ball" approach. The entire production is emceed by lovely TLD producer Ashley Lollis, who introduces and wraps up each lesson.

TMBG starts at the very, very beginning with the most basic of the basics. Roy conducts the early examples very slowly, making the course accessible for even first-time bass player wannabes. The material gets increasingly complex, gradually, throughout the ten-DVDs. Each lesson begins with a warm-up and ends with a cool-down, usually involving Roy demonstrating a variety of stretching exercises.

Beginning with basic chromatic movement on the fingerboard, then progressing to sharps and flats, elementary music theory, key signatures, time signatures, half-steps, whole-steps and major and minor scales, Roy's presentation couldn't be more clear, particularly with the use of multiple camera angles, helpful editing and Roy's straightforward, easy to understand approach.

One of the most valuable - and useful - aspects of Teach Me Bass Guitar is taking nearly every lesson into Chateau Groove where Roy performs each musical example along with a first-rate group of Nashville studio musicians: Shane Roberts (guitar), Byron Larrance (drums) and Tim McDonald (keyboards). Roy demonstrates each selection two times with the band, once slow and once fast.

But wait! It gets even better! - (I exclaim at the risk of sounding like an info-mercial) -after each full-band performance, Roy sits out and lets you, the student, play the bass part along with this great band. This opportunity is provided at both tempos for all selections, resulting in over one hundred play-along opportunities!

Roy also wants to make sure you fully master each lesson before playing along with the band. Each lesson, therefore, has a "Loop Library," enabling you to woodshed everything Roy presents, over and over again, until it's securely under your fingers.

"Wow!

Try as I might, I couldn't come up with anything that's missing from this incredibly comprehensive course. Everyone will undoubtedly learn something new by going through this series. I know I did.

"Teach Me Bass Guitar is, hands-down, the most comprehensive bass instructional course I have come across!"

NOTE: Reviewer Evan Gregor is a Berklee Graduate and professional instructor.

I was inspired to put up this Teach Me Bass Guitar review because I’ve come across so many people looking for quality bass instruction that do not always have the time or resources for regular private lessons – and even if they do, there is usually separate time or expense spent on finding good, inspiring materials to practice and play with.

I myself have a degree in electric bass from Berklee College of Music and teach privately, in the classroom and often at accredited schools  in New York City. I am quite impressed with everything I’ve seen from this program, and it truly is a *course* – on both bass and musicianship, plus it is a visual / audio practice tool, set of play-along recordings and more in one package that is fun to work with.

In all honesty, the full price of this course would get you 2 or 3 private lessons with me and maybe a small book or two – nothing near the amount of content here which you can use over and over again.

THE LOWDOWN

The course spans 20 lessons contained in 10 DVDs. At a total of more than 16 hours viewing time, this is hands-down the most comprehensive bass instructional course I have come across.

If you are a total newbie, I feel you will get a more thorough and valuable foundation than you will from many private teachers out there, because the reality of the situation is that not everyone has a local, affordable teacher on the level of Roy Vogt. Also the luxury of watching the material over and over again is huge.

If you have some experience on the bass, don't worry about the course being too basic- it's very thorough and goes into some serious musical and technical territory. It is also quite likely to “fill in some gaps” or details that may have been overlooked.

Each DVD is really packed with material, no BS, no filler just to make this seem like a big course to charge you more. The video is shot in widescreen HD, and both the audio and video are top-notch. Teach Me Bass Guitar is a rare instructional material that covers the fundamentals of playing from the ground up, and takes it into advanced territory with the right foundations. This course really stands out in a sea of lackluster instructional materials. For sheer quality, quantity, range, presentation, and actual, practical practice use, Teach Me Bass Guitar is a good investment by any standards.

"TMBG is one place where you can learn the tools you need to become a great bass player!"

Since you've found your way to this bass DVD course review, you probably already know how hard it is to find good info on learning to play the bass guitar. It’s easy to find bits and pieces of bass lessons out there, but not so easy to find a solid bass learning system to help take you from zero to pro easily. Enter Teach Me Bass Guitar (TMBG), a comprehensive 10 DVD bass lesson course by veteran Nashville bassist Roy Vogt. It includes 16 hours of step-by-step video bass lessons and a 162 page detailed color instruction manual in PDF format. (A spiral bound printed manual is also available).

The course is broken down in to 20 separate bass lessons and was filmed in a high quality wide screen format. Your bass adventure begins in the “Chateau Groove”, a comfortable coffee house setting where Roy will be transferring his bass wisdom into your brain and fingers. Over the course of 20 different bass lessons, you will learn what it takes to hold down the low end of the music. If you're brand new to the bass, you have come to the right place. You are going to start off with learning the basic parts of the bass and some finger exercises essential to developing the muscles you need to play. If you've already been playing for a while, don’t think this is just a beginner bass DVD course. Far from it. Even if you already know your way around the neck, Roy is going to super charge your knowledge of the fretboard and bass playing in general.

Besides just learning about the various bass topics and ideas, it’s essential that you practice the material from the lessons in your course. And this is where Teach Me Bass Guitar really shines. The course includes multiple ways to help you practice the material. The first is in the lessons themselves. Roy plays with you through the various songs and exercises at various speeds, often giving you tips and tricks along the way.

Next is the “Loop Library” feature on the DVD’s. This can be accessed from the main menu, and within the lessons themselves. This is a very handy feature where you can practice with Roy on a particular exercise, and it automatically loops back to the beginning when finished. So you can practice an exercise multiple times without having to fight with your dvd player’s remote trying to rewind.

The third way this course helps you practice is probably the most fun. It’s playing along with some top Nashville session players. The songs are played at a few different speeds, both with Roy playing bass, and without. When Roy steps away, you become the bass player in a great band and you have to hold your own…on your own. Don’t be afraid though, you are only a button away from starting a song over again if things get too crazy for you. There are over 100 different play along videos for you to jam with to make practicing fun.

If you're looking for one place where you can learn the tools you need to become a great bass player. This course is going to help you get to where you want to go. Roy can guide you, and make the practice fun and easier.

For more info about Teach Me Bass Guitar, visit their website. And go ahead and grab a copy of the course while you are there. They have a full 90 day return policy, so you have no worries if you find the course is not right for you.

"On a scale of five stars, TMBG gets a solid SIX!"

Learning to play the bass guitar should be a fun experience, and to make the most of it you need to have proper instruction. Taking lessons from a private instructor might do the trick, providing you have the flexibility to adapt to their schedule. And, of course, private lessons can make a serious dent in the weekly budget.

What if you could learn at home, from one of the most respected bass teachers and players in the world?

Roy Vogt, world-renowned bass virtuoso, teacher, and performer has put together a stellar 20-lesson video course that you can follow along with using your home DVD player or computer.

Roy has performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, the London Palladium, numerous venues in Las Vega, New York, Chicago, and L.A., and the Kremlin just to name a few. During the school year, he teaches bass & music at Belmont University in Nashville, where he is head of the bass department and has been teaching for 30 years. He and his former students record and perform with some of the biggest names in music, including Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Little Texas, Michael W. Smith, Lady Antebellum, Chick Corea, Sir Tom Jones, Blood Sweat and Tears, Yanni, Larry Coryell, Gerald Veasley, Victor Wooten, Dave Weckl, Tom Scott and the LA Express, Chester Thompson, Miroslav Vitous, Glenn Campbell, BJ Thomas, Chet Atkins, Englebert Humperdink, Dickey Betts, Tony Joe White, Charlie Daniels, and dozens more.

In short, Roy Vogt is the caliber of bass guitar teacher most of us couldn't hope to spend session time with, but Teach Me Bass Guitar makes it possible!

TMBG has been put together in such a way that you can learn at your own pace, taking breaks whenever you like and returning to your study a little later (like when your fingers have stopped tingling!)

This makes learning bass guitar flexible and fun. And to make it more enjoyable, you can think about the three or four thousand dollars you're saving with Teach Me Bass Guitar compared to private lessons; and YOU set the pace, so your learning can be as rapid or leisurely as you wish.

On a scale of five stars, Teach Me Bass Guitar gets a solid six. Look as long and hard as you want (like I have), you're not going to find anything that comes close to TMBG.

The Ultimate DVD Series for Beginning Bassists

"A definite must-buy for the serious bass student."

by Damian Erskine - Bass Musician Magazine

While I normally only review CDs, I was sent a full copy of Roy Vogt's new 10 disc DVD instructional series, Teach Me Bass Guitar and had to tell you about it. While there are a lot of great instructional DVDs out there, the tapes/discs that I've seen that were geared towards the beginning student have never really either gone deep enough, started early enough in development or, were just generally lacking in some way.

I believe Roy's series to be the ultimate DVD series for the beginning bassist!

The information is laid out in an incredibly easy to understand way and the production is top-shelf with great diagrams, animated fretboards, play-along video sessions and Roy's easy to understand, plain English explanations.

While some may consider it to be a bit pricey ($187.50 as of the time of this review) you must consider the full spectrum of what you're purchasing. This could easily replace any number of instructional videos I have collecting dust in my basement. Not to sound like a sales pitch, but you get 10 full DVD's of material. He really covers the spectrum and gives you everything you need to get the job done properly. The only thing missing is the student's own motivation and time to practice.

"I’ve played bass guitar for more than 40 years, and I’m still learning from Roy."

When Roy first told me he was creating Teach Me Bass Guitar (TMBG for short), I was so happy for him! He’s not only one of the finest teachers on the planet, he’s also a wonderful person who has given tens of thousands of hours to others as a teacher, mentor, producer, band leader, arranger, session and career coach and much more. I immediately told Roy I would do whatever I could to help promote the course. Even though I hadn’t seen a minute of footage, I knew Roy would do his usual superb best. And boy did he ever!

Over the months, one thing led to another and I eventually served a short stint as VP, Sales & Outreach for The Learning Dock, LLC (TLD), publishers of TMBG And while I am no longer involved in the company, I am still one of Roy’s most ardent supporters, and a sincere, dedicated promoter of his new course. In addition, TLD is an amazing company that’s going to change the way we learn in the 21st century. Sure, there are other DVD courses available, even online lessons. But there’s never been a course like Teach Me Bass Guitar.

Here’s the short version: if you want to learn to play bass, or are a beginner to advanced-intermediate player who wants to refine their technique and build their chops, Teach Me Bass Guitar is for you. There’s no other course like it on the planet – not even close! In Twenty Lessons, you’ll get as much information as you’d get in more than FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS in private lessons with Roy!

If you’re serious about playing bass guitar, put down the toys and get this course! TMBG has everything you need. All you add is practice – as little as 15 minutes a day. Follow along as Roy teaches you in easy to understand steps, until you’re ready to take any stage or studio by storm. It’s just that easy!

If you’re really ready to to learn to play electric bass, hit the order button below and get your copy of TMBG today. (Take my advice, and get the companion workbook in printed form, as I find that much easier to use than the PDF version. It’s worth a few extra dollars.)

Old Dogs Learn New Tricks

I’ve played bass guitar for more than 40 years, and I’m still learning from Roy. Keep in mind that I’ve had access to his knowledge in various ways for over 20 years! I’ve read hundreds of online lessons and had thousands of online and telephone conversations with him about technique, theory, line-building and more. Even so, there’s new material for me in Teach Me Bass Guitar Even in the early lessons, I was reminded of concepts that needed a little review. In the later lessons, I refined techniques that were weak, and learned new concepts, techniques and theory.

So if this old dog – who has forty years on the instrument, and 25 years as a pro – can learn new tricks from Teach Me Bass Guitar, imagine what you can learn!

And I’m not the only one who has many years on the instrument who finds serious value in the course. Every week, I hear from other TMBG students who have been playing 5, 10, 20 years and more, and they love the course! (Log on to laneonbass.com to read the rest of Lane's in-depth review.)

"TMBG is a comprehensive course, ideal for the beginner and intermediate player."

Bass Guitar Magazine, U.K.

In terms of sheer quantity of material, Teach Me Bass Guitar (TMBG) looks like it means business. The lessons are delivered by respected Nashville sideman Roy Vogt, who has worked with many top musicians, including Victor Wooten. So what you get for your hard earned wedge is a spiral bound book and a set of 10 (yes 10!) DVDs. Each DVD contains several lessons.

Things start out nice and easy, with an overview of the bass, its component parts, tunings, fretting hand and picking hand placement. Roy takes a look at fingerstyle playing initially, but covers slap and pick playing later on. From there the lessons progress into various aspects of theory, scales, chord progressions, time signatures, two handed tapping and beyond. There’s a lot of material to work through, and Roy explains things slowly and clearly, and of course as a DVD you can skip back and forth over something until you’ve got it nailed.

The production qualities of the DVD are good, with clear video and audio. The DVDs are very thorough, and easy to watch. Roy is clearly not just a great player, but an able teacher and this makes things much less awkward than some of the tuition DVDs you’ll find from other players.

The book is useful for reference, and contains scores of all the exercises and tunes so you can practise without the DVD if you want. Being spiral bound means it stays open on your music stand or on a table. The important stuff, the scores and the text, are cleanly presented and easy to follow.

The major sticking point for people will be the price, plus the shipping costs from the States. However, there’s a lot of material on offer here. It’s a pretty comprehensive course of lessons, and would be ideal for the beginner and intermediate player.

"TMBG is exceptional; an all-out venture into the fabulous world of learning bass..."

by Ty Campbell - Bass Frontiers Magazine

(Even) the packaging for Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar (TMBG) is exceptional, with ease of access to each DVD. There are a total of 10 DVD’s (covering 20 lessons), and a .pdf book is included on one of the DVD’s so that you can either view it on your computer, or print each lesson out individually. When ordering, there is also an option to order the book in print, for those that would like to do so. There is an included code so that you can register on Thunder Row, (the companion community website).

Getting into the lessons, TMBG is suited for any range of expertise from absolute beginner to even some of the more advanced bassists out there. Starting with lesson 1, TMBG covers the names of the strings, hardware, tuning, picking styles, right-hand and left hand technique, fingerings, thumb position and pivot, using a metronome, warm-up exercise, learning the notes of the musical alphabet, sharps/flats, positions on the neck, and names of notes and where they are on the neck, and all the way through lesson 20, which covers 4,5,6, and 7 strings basses, eq, effects, and caring for your bass.

Each lesson also has an on-screen fingerboard displaying what Roy is playing during the lesson and the position of the neck he is playing on. After almost each lesson, there is a jam session with the band on what was covered in the lesson. Most of these are done with Roy playing the tune slowly at first, then it’s your turn playing with the band sans Roy. The tune is then done in the same method again, but at a faster speed. Everything concerning bass in between lesson 1 and 20 is covered in TMBG, this includes, learning notes in different positions, note types (quarter, eighth, etc) scales, triads, blues, swing, shuffles, jazz concepts, soloing, funk, slap, chords, tapping, warm-up exercise, cool-down exercises and much more. Lesson 16 through lesson 19 is where the working pro toolkit comes into play. The working pro toolkit covers sight-reading, standard progressions, Nashville number system, and world music, among quite a few other things that are definitely necessary for the working pro bassist.

Another nice feature of TMBG is the loop library. Each lesson is done in sections, and if you are having problems with a certain section of the lesson and want to go over just that particular part, well, it will be in the loop library. Each section of the loop library has it’s own unique title which refers back to the section of the lesson. As it may take a while for someone just starting out to get through an entire lesson, the loop library comes in real handy. More advanced players may want to use the loop library to just jam along with band.

"Teach Me Bass Guitar is the Definitive A-Z Bass Guitar Course!"

For years, there's been a dearth of quality video-based bass guitar courses for new bassists available online. That changed in a big way with the creation of Teach Me Bass Guitar, (TMBG) a new course from The Learning Dock, a multimedia music education company.

Teach Me Bass Guitar is comprised of 10 full-length DVDs and 20 lessons that clock in at over 16 hours of bass instruction. This is by far the largest bass course we've seen to date, containing well over a year's worth of bass lessons, so this is not a program you'll want to rush through. If you're able to master everything through lessons 10, you'll already be a very competent bassist. Though the course was designed with beginners in mind, it doesn't leave you there long. Intermediate bass players will find the course relevant to their development as well.

I'm going to spill the beans right off the bat; Teach Me Bass Guitar is the definitive A-Z bass guitar course on the market today and we highly recommend it. In addition to the accolades Teach Me Bass Guitar has garnered from the greater bass community, it has been the recipient of an AEGIS Video & Film production award and a First Place Telly Award.

Teach Me Bass Guitar makes the most of the DVD format by stuffing all 10 DVDs with pretty much all the lesson content that they could fit in, unlike other courses out there that split up a modest-sized course into as many DVDs as they can to make their product offering look more impressive. The lessons were filmed in widescreen HD and the video and audio quality is most impressive.

There are over 100 play-along music videos where you get to accompany studio professionals. Most of the songs are played 4 times. Once with Roy playing the bass, one without Roy, one at a slow speed and another at a faster tempo. These play-along sessions aren't just tacked on to the end of the course either, but are a vital part of the course. You'll get to experience the fun of jamming with a pro band at least once in almost every lesson. Band musicians include a drummer, keyboardist, guitarist, and even a vocalist from time to time. I'll add that the songs selections are excellent and the music really grooves.
One of the best technical innovations in Teach Me Bass Guitar is the "real time fretboard" that shows what notes Roy is currently playing. This onscreen aid is an incredible tool as it enables you to easily recognize fretting patterns, note placement, and generally removes any doubt you may have in regards to what Roy is doing.

It's easy to miss, but in the onscreen menus, each lesson's DVD menu has an item called the "Loop Library". When you select this option, you are presented with a list of exercises and songs within that lesson that you can choose to play. Upon your selection, it will loop that particular exercise over and over for easy practicing (No more holding down the rewind button). This is a very helpful and unique feature that I haven't seen in any another DVD courses out there.

Teach Me Bass Guitar is the most comprehensive bass course we've come across for the serious bassist. There's no way you could get private lessons with someone of Roy's caliber for anywhere close to the price tag TMBG goes for. Add to the fact that innovations like the real time fretboard and live play-alongs make learning the bass easier and more enjoyable than ever before.

TMBG will give you all the tools and information you need to play in pretty much and kind of situation you find yourself in. As their website says, all you have to do is provide the practice!
